The year 2012 was a booming one for movies. Fiction and non-fiction movies representing genres that span the realm of drama, comedy, romance, adventure and musicals brought spectators out to the cinema in droves. In other words, there was something for everybody’s taste. 2012 was such a blockbuster year for movies that people had difficulty deciding whether to purchase box office theater tickets or cinema tickets for their weekend outings. And despite difficult financial times, Hollywood set a new record in 2012.

10. The Dark Knight Rises
The final installment of the Christopher Nolan directed Batman trilogy, The Dark Knight Rises was a critical and box office success.
9. Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2
Then there is the latest in the werewolf/vampire Twilight franchise, namely Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2. This movie wasn’t so well received critically, but was big with its built-in young adult audience and a huge draw.
The Alien prequel Prometheus was a success.
7. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
As was the latest J.R.R. Tolkien-inspired The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, both receiving good reviews and attracting a large audience.
Finally, the fiftieth anniversary of the Bond series was celebrated by critics and fans alike, with the release of Skyfall, the 23rd Bond film. Numerous critics claimed it was the best Bond film so far.
5. Life of Pi
Life of Pi, based on a best-selling, critically-acclaimed book, not only garnered big box office numbers and the praise of critics, it earned eleven Academy Award nominations.
4. Silver Linings Playbook
Silver Linings Playbook, a romantic comedy with Robert Deniro, also drew crowds, too many for anyone to continuing to call it a sleeper.
3. Les Miserables
Les Miserables, a sweeping epic inspired by the long-running, successful Broadway musical, is also based on the famous Victor Hugo novel of the same name. The dramatic film is also a musical with a star-studded cast including Anne Hathaway and Hugh Jackman, both of whom received Oscar nominations for their roles.
A few major Hollywood directors made splashes in 2012 as well. Steven Spielberg, for instance, produced and directed the historical drama, Lincoln. This epic Civil War piece has critics raving while drawing audiences in droves. This is the must-see film of 2012 as evidenced by its’ twelve Academy Award nominations, the most of any movie of that year.
1. Django Unchained
Quentin Tarantino surfaced with a graphic period piece set in the antebellum south, Django Unchained that he wrote and directed. The film, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, has received universal acclaim.
