Bee Hummingbird – World’s Smallest Bird

Bee Hummingbird is the smallest bird in the world. World’s smallest bird was described by Spanish naturalist Juan Lembeye in 1850. Endemic to Cuba, it is only 5-6 cm (2 in) in length and weighs less than a U.S. penny, only slightly heavier than a paperclip!

Bee Hummingbird (Mellisuga helenae) is NOT related to Bumblebee Hummingbird (Atthis heloisa) of Mexico. Both are separate species.

Scientific name of Bee hummingbird is Mellisuga helenae. Mellisgua means “honey-sucker” and word Helenae honors Helena Booth, a benefactress of Juan Gundlach, the Cuban naturalist who first identified the bird.
